Divorcing spouses lived all year in different states (VA, FL). How do I code state residence at the bottom of federal information sheet?

The federal return is joint. Spouse living in Florida has no state return.

  1. Are you sure it's a good idea to file MFJ when the couple is going through a divorce?
  2. Assuming the couple will file MFJ even under these circumstances and provided one spouse was a FY tax resident of FL but a nonresident of VA, VA permits MFS to be used by the resident spouse for state tax filing purposes.  You can follow the instructions in this article: https://accountants-community.intuit.com/articles/1608708-preparing-two-married-filing-separate-stat...
