2017 MFS to 2018 MFJ - how to fill out Form 8801. Do I combine and treat as MFJ for 8801 purposes? If MFJ they receive a credit. If MFJ no credit carryforward.

F.8801 is a rehash of last year's AMT without deferral items.  It only makes sense to compute the credit separately but figure the limitation based on the liability on the current years joint return.
