When I attempt to log into the desktop proseries 2018 I receive an error stating that the login failed and to retype my user name and password.

Click on the "I forgot my User ID or Password" on the sign-in screen and see if those procedures get you back in.

When I clicked on forgot my password it told me that my username was not valid, but I know it is correct, as I am signed into my portal (which uses the same log in credentials).
