Entering taxpayer authentication and identity protection PIN in ProConnect Tax

SOLVEDby Intuit49Updated October 03, 2023

Taxpayers that have contacted IRS and been validated as being the victims of identity theft—which has affected their abiliy to file their federal return—are issued an Identity Protection PIN (IPN or IP PIN). The IPN is a unique six-digit number which you must enter into Intuit ProConnect when filing their tax return. The program has inputs for the taxpayer, spouse and dependents.

Refer to this IRS FAQ for more information about Identity Protection PINs. If the taxpayer was issued an IPPIN and it's not entered into the tax return before e-filing the IRS will reject the return with Rejection IND-181-01. Entering the IPPIN and e-filing the return again will resolve this rejection.

Follow these steps to enter the IPN in the program:

  1. Go to the Input Return tab.
  2. From the left of the screen, select General and choose Client Information.
  3. Scroll down to the Tax Authentication section.
  4. Enter the taxpayer's six-digit IPN/IP PIN in the Theft Protection PIN input field.
    • If this is a Married Filing Joint return, scroll further down to the Spouse Tax Authentication section to enter this field.

If a dependent also has an IPN/IP PIN, follow the next set of instructions below.

Follow these steps to enter a dependent's IPN:

  1. Go to the Input Return tab.
  2. From the left of the screen, select General and choose Dependents.
  3. Under the General Information section, enter any applicable information about the dependent.
  4. Enter the Theft Protection PIN at the bottom of this section.
