How to reset the primary or e-file password in ProSeries


Before proceeding with any of the steps in this article for resetting the password, you must verify the customer identity using the full 6-step ID proofing outlined in this article.  

  1. From the Tools menu, select Options.
  2. Click on Passwords on the left side.
  3. Click in the first available Primary Password field.
  4. Hold down the ALT key, then press the F12 key, then the letter C.
    • If you are running ProSeries remotely and using a MAC keyboard, use FN + Option + F12 +C.
  5. A small screen will appear with a code to provide Customer Service.
  6. Contact Customer Service and provide the 6-digit code on screen to them. For contact information including hours of operation, please visit ProSeries Hours of Operation.
  7. You will be given an unlock code that will change your password.
  8. Enter authorization code provided and click OK.
  9. Set up a new Primary Password or leave it as is.
  10. Under Electronic Filing Transmission check the box for ProSeries should always prompt for the electronic filing password, enter unlock code on electronic filing password field.
  11. Check or uncheck the box if e-file password is desired.
  12. Enter new e-file password and hit OK.
  1. From the Tools menu, select Options.
  2. From the Options screen, select Passwords from the left menu..
  3. If Enter existing primary password is in white, a primary password exists.

Note: If this field is in gray, a Primary Password has not been set.

  1. Enter the Primary Password, as soon as it is typed the checkbox for ProSeries should always prompt for the electronic filing password will no longer be grayed out.
  2. Click on the checkbox to remove the check mark.
  3. Click 'Yes' on the message indicating to delete the E-file Password.
