Administrator Rights for Updates

js15

Lacerte needs to come up with a way for updates to install to non-administrator users!  This is a huge security risk to any firm using Lacerte.  Admin rights should be necessary for the initial installation but not for weekly, sorry I mean daily updates!

Agreed. They made this "enhancement" many years ago. I complained about it for a while and then gave up. We now give staff administrative rights to their computers. It may be limited somehow - I am no longer in charge of IT so I don't know.

i couldn't agree more. anyone using a different solution than either sharing a local admin password for the update or granting local admin to each lacerte user?

i see Lacerte has its "Update Scheduler" https://proconnect.intuit.com/community/update-products/help/schedule-automatic-update-downloads-wit...

Is there a way to call this utility via Windows Scheduled Tasks such that the Scheduled Task can be run with the desired account as opposed to the day to day user account?  Doing so would allow non-admin users to receive updates regularly and even run the Windows Scheduled Task manually if they absolutely need the latest update from Lacerte.

@grumpylacertadmin, in theory your idea works but the update scheduler only downloads the updates for Lacerte, it does not install the updates on the computers.  Also in a network environment once 1 person downloads the updates all users must install the update.

For security reasons, even I (the owner) do not use admin rights for installing software - (now except for Lacerte updates) but only my external tech team. So, - when updates are downloaded and I or tech updates on one machine - everyone in the office is prevented from working unless they have access to 1) the owner - me who is normally meeting with clients - or 2) our external IT department - and then updates become an EMERGENCY as if someone cut the power or internet off at the office, production is dead in the water. What good is that. Lacerte, Intuit, please what is the solution. . . . feels like a strong arm to move to hosted environment.

thanks @js15 for the clarification.  too bad the update scheduler is simply an update downloader.  (sigh)

I just spent 2 days adding a module to lacerte only to find we can't do any updates without being an admin.  So productivity this tax season will be slow and frustrating.  I think our tech support just wants to charge us more hours for doing what we've been able to do for years.

Massive security design flaw from a bygone era. As an IT professional this is one of my biggest annoyances. Accountants in the firm have numerous programs, none of which requires admin rights EXCEPT Lacerte. The only way around this is to purchase a 3rd party program to elevate rights when needed, share an admin account (PLEASE DON'T DO THIS) or probably what Intuit really wants, everyone to go Hosted. I feel Intuit has given up on the development of its core product. It seems as though Lacerte is based on 16-bit programming (win32 at best) and the only time we as users get enhancements is when customers demand it. We demand better now!
