Perform a clean install of Document Management System (DMS)

Most database issues for DMS can be resolved by running DBRepair. See DMS Database Repair Utility for details.

If you have attempted to repair your DMS Database and the program is still encountering errors or will not open it may be necessary to repair your installation of DMS. This does not impact your database or any files located within your database.

Before you start:

  • This process often involves restarting your computer. It is recommended to print these steps for future reference.
  • You will need to know where your DMS Database is stored. See Locating the DMS Database for assistance.
  • This process requires modification of the Windows registry. We highly recommend making a backup of the registry before starting. See How to back up and restore the registry in Windows for steps on how to make the backup. If you are not comfortable with the Windows Registry these steps can be completed by your local IT.

Follow these steps to perform a clean install of DMS:

  1. Close DMS and all other Intuit products.
  2. In the Windows Search bar type Control Panel.
  3. Choose Uninstall a program.
  4. On the list find either Lacerte DMS or ProSeries DMS depending on your version.
  5. Right click on your version of DMS and choose Uninstall.
  6. On the Welcome screen choose Remove and then Next.
  7. When asked if you want to completely remove the selected application choose Yes.
  8. Once complete you will be prompted to restart your computer. Choose Yes, I want to restart my computer now and click Finish.
  9. Once completed open File Explorer and navigate to:  C:\Program Files (x86)\Intuit\
  10. Right click on the DMS folder and choose Rename.
  11. Change the name to DMSOLD
  12. Hold down the Windows key on your keyboard and press R.
  13. Type %temp% and press Enter to open the Windows Temp folder
  14. Look for DMSTemp.
    • If present right-click on DMSTemp and choose Rename to change the name to DMSTempOld 
  15. Hold down the Windows key on your keyboard and press R.
  16. Type regedit and press Enter.
  17. Backup your Windows Registry if you have not yet done so:
    Making changes to the Windows Registry can prevent your computer from functioning correctly or booting. If you are not skilled in working with the Windows Registry we highly recommend contacting a local IT Professional before proceeding.
  18. Navigate to the appropriate Current User registry key for your installed version of DMS:
    • ProSeries DMS: HKEY_CURRENT_USER>Software> ProSeries
    • Lacerte DMS: HKEY_CURRENT_USER>Software> Lacerte
  19. Right-click on the DMS folder in the registry and choose Delete.
  20. Click Yes to confirm the deletion.  If you do not see the DMS folder proceed to the next step.
  21. Navigate to the appropriate local Machine registry key for your installed version of DMS:
    • ProSeries DMS: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE>Software> ProSeries
    • Lacerte DMS: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE>Software> Lacerte (or HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE>Software>Wow6432Node>Lacerte)
  22. Right-click on the DMS folder, and choose Delete.
  23. Click Yes to confirm the deletion.
  24. Restart the computer.
  25. Browse to your DMS Database folder.
  26. Run the DMSETUP.exe file to reinstall DMS.
