Perform a Clean Install of DMS

When unable to resolve errors with Intuit ProConnect Lacerte Document Management System or Intuit ProConnect ProSeries Document Management System (DMS) or if you cannot open the program and have tried repairing DMS, the next step is to perform a "clean install" of DMS. A clean install will remove DMS and all of the files it leaves behind after an uninstall but will not remove your DMS database or personal files that you have stored within the DMS Database.

Follow these steps to perform a clean install of DMS:

Before you begin: It is a good idea to print out these steps prior to getting started.  You will need to restart your computer during this process.
  1. Locate where your DMS Database is stored and note this location to use later in this step. For assistance please see: Locating the DMS Database.
    • Note: Open your DMS. The path of your last opened database will be displayed in the bottom status bar within DMS.
  2. Close out of DMS and all other Intuit products.
  3. Go to your Start menu, click Control Panel, and double-click on Programs & Features.
  4. Highlight your installed version of DMS and click the Change/Remove button.
  5. Click the Next button in the maintenance wizard and choose Uninstall.
  6. Click the next button Next and then click Uninstall.
  7. Navigate to the following location and rename the folder to DMSold:   C:Program Files (x86)IntuitDMS
    • Note: You can right-click on the folder and choose Rename, then type the word old at the end (DMS old for example).
  8. Hold down the Windows key on your keyboard and press R (Windows + R) to open the Run Command.
  9. Type %temp% and press Enter to open the 'Windows Temp' folder in the 'Windows File Explorer'.
  10. Right-click on 'DMSTemp' choose Rename. 
  11. Rename the folder to DMSTempold and close the 'Windows File Explorer'.
  12. Back up your Windows Registry.

Important! Making changes to the Windows Registry can prevent your computer from functioning correctly or booting. If you are not skilled in working with the Windows Registry we highly recommend contacting a local IT Professional before proceeding.

  1. Hold down the Windows key on your keyboard and press R (Windows + R) to open the Run Command.
  2. Type regedit and press Enter.
  3. Navigate to appropriate Current User registry key for your installed version of DMS:
    • ProSeries DMS: HKEY_CURRENT_USER>Software> ProSeries
    • Lacerte DMS: HKEY_CURRENT_USER>Software> Lacerte
  4. Right-click on the DMS folder in the registry and choose Delete.
  5. Click Yes to confirm the deletion.  If you do not see the DMS folder proceed to the next step.
  6. Navigate to appropriate local Machine registry key for your installed version of DMS:
    • ProSeries DMS: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE>Software> ProSeries
    • Lacerte DMS: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE>Software> Lacerte (or HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE>Software>Wow6432Node>Lacerte)
  7. Right-click on the DMS folder, and choose Delete.
  8. Click Yes to confirm the deletion.  If you do not see the DMS folder just proceed to the next step.
  9. Reboot the computer before proceeding.
  10. Run the setup file located in your DMS database to reinstall the program, using the Database path you noted in step 1.
  11. Open your database to verify DMS is functioning properly.
