How to make payments for extension Form 4868 in Lacerte

SOLVEDby Intuit72Updated July 17, 2023

Lacerte automatically carries the balance due shown on Form 1040 to Form 4868, Application for Automatic Extension of Time To File U.S. Individual Income Tax Return based on the various inputs entered for the return.

Follow these steps to enter a different payment amount:

  1. Go to Screen 9, Extensions (4868, 2350).
  2. Locate the Automatic Extension section.
  3. Enter a 1 in 1 = automatic extension, 2 = blank (MANDATORY).
  4. Enter the Total tax liability (-1=none) [O].
  5. Enter the Total payments [O].
  6. Enter the Form 4868 payment (defaults to amount due) [O].

When electronically filing a group of extensions, Lacerte will transmit the balance due if you don't enter an override on Screen 9, Extensions.

Follow these steps to e-file electronic payments with extension:

  1. Go to Screen 3, Miscellaneous Information/Direct Deposit.
  2. Scroll down to the Direct Deposit of Refund / Electronic Payment section.
  3. Under the Extension subsection, check the Electronic payment of tax due with extension box.

Yes, you can e-file the extension and mail the payment by check or money order. If you e-file Form 4868 and mail a check or money order to the IRS for payment, use a completed paper Form 4868 as a voucher.

Refer to the instructions at the top of Form 4868 for more information about mailing payments.
