Problem Description

How do I enter installment payments of amount due on tax return?


Solution Description
To generate Form 9465:
  1. Go to Screen 80, Installment Agreement Request (9465).
  2. Enter the amount of any payment being made in, Amount paid with return (-1= none) (Form 9465, line 8).
  3. Enter the monthly payment in, Proposed monthly payment amount (9465, line 9).
  4. Enter a '1-28' in, Day of month payment due (1st through 28th) (9465, line 10).
  5. Enter the, Most convenient time to call you at home (9465, line 3).
  6. Enter the, Most convenient time to call you at work (9465, line 4).
  7. Complete the information under the Bank subsection:
    1. Enter the Name
    2. Enter the Street address
    3. Enter the City
    4. Enter the State
    5. Enter the ZIP code
    6. Enter the Routing number
    7. Enter the Checking account number
  8. Complete the information under the Employer subsection:
    1. Enter the Name
    2. Enter the Street address
    3. Enter the City
    4. Enter the State
    5. Enter the ZIP code
  9. Check any of the applicable boxes:
    • Change of address
    • Attach to Form 1040X
    • Filing in response to a notice
    • Not filing with Form 1040 (separate filing instruction)
Entering Automatic Withdrawal information:  If payment by automatic withdrawal from your checking account is desired, enter the routing number for the bank or financial institution from which the withdrawals are to be made.
 
  • The first two digits of the routing number must be 01 through 12 or 21 through 32.
  • The checking account number can be up to 17 characters (both numbers and letters). Include hyphens but omit spaces and special symbols.
Note:  Do not use a deposit slip to verify the number because it may contain internal routing numbers that are not part of the actual routing number.
 

Guaranteed installment agreement:  Your request for an installment agreement cannot be turned down if the tax you owe is not more than $10,000 and all three of the following apply.
  • During the past 5 tax years, you (and your spouse if filing joint return) have timely filed all income tax returns and paid any income tax due, and have not entered into an installment agreement for payment of income tax.
  • The IRS determines that you cannot pay the tax owed in full when it is due and you give the IRS any information needed to make that determination.
  • You agree to pay the full amount you owe within 3 years and to comply with the tax laws while the agreement is in effect.
