There is no reason to file multiple returns for the same SSN. In some situations due to the software limitation, we have to create a "dummy" return, for example, for a spouse to file separately on state while already filed jointly on federal. In this case the return should not be charged as it has already been charged on federal and return we bought covers the state.

The current solution is to request credit. It works sometimes but it took a lot of explanation, and time consumed by both parties. However, I believe there is a simple technical solution which is just and fair for both customers and the company.

If what I suggested is implemented, I believe this will also solve the problem allowing us to the SSN as we will pay per SSN.

The alternate solution is NOT to print or e-file. There is no charge to Check Return

I believe filing state only still causes you a credit.

Agree with George.  This is how PTO's PPR works.

We do create scenario returns but never print any unless we are committed to using a particular version for filing.

PTO is already relatively generous in that you can prepare an entire return without any restrictions on functionality or charge until you print or e-file.  In Lacerte and ProSeries, you must first have a Fast Path license for PPR to use the software and must then pay with a credit before being allowed to view any form in a return.

Filing either a federal or state return will cost you a credit.

If not a valid SSN, which creates an error with the tax program, in my opinion, should not be counted against the limit on PPR.

I received comments like:

"The alternate solution is NOT to print or e-file. There is no charge to Check Return."

While this is true, it is not related to what I was proposing.

"Agree with George."

I also agree with George, but what he said is not related to what I was proposing.

"Filing either a federal or state return will cost you a credit."

Yes, this is true, but filing both federal and state does not cost two credits.
