The IRS form no longer has the year.  So there is no need to do anything in regards to the year.

Or are you referring to something else?

Form 8879 now has a fill in the blank (year) line.

He is wanting an error message to remind you to fill in the blank.

Msmith7305 is correct.  I am wanting an error message to remind me to fill in the blank.

TaxGuyBill the form no longer has the year in the corner, but you have to fill it out on the line for Part I because you could be using it for the current year or you could be using it to amend a prior year electronically.

Good idea, that should be a required field with an error if left blank.

On the other hand, shouldn't the 2020 program just automatically fill in 2020?   The 2020 program is only used to file 2020 tax returns, right?

I don't know how it works when you efile an amended return if you do it on curren 1040-X or prior.

Even though ProSeries has check boxes to amend prior year returns on the 1040X, I don't think you can actually do that.  The program uses 2020 tax laws, not prior year tax laws.  

So unless you filling out and calculating the 1040X manually, you use the 2019 software to amend 2019.

So I think it should automatically fill in the current year.

@chasetax   Are your directions for editing a client template for ProSeries or is it for Lacerte?

Unfortunately, a Template edit will only be effective for NEW files, not files transferred from prior year.

That's only for new clients not transferred clients

Editing the client template does not make the year print in bold in the upper right hand corner. The phase "QMB No. 1545-0074" is there, not the year.
