Locating Lacerte .ini files

SOLVEDby Intuit1Updated October 17, 2023

This article contains a list of Lacerte's .ini files and their locations.

List of Lacerte .ini files

The abbreviation TY in filenames refers to the tax year.

  • wTYtax.ini
  • TYtax.ini
  • LacerteHostName.ini (TY2009 and later)
  • Lacerte.ini (TY2008 and earlier)
  • wTYsetup.ini
  • wTYcal.ini
  • updsched.ini
  • DMS.ini

Locations of .ini files

Locations of .ini files used by 2010 Lacerte and later are stored in the following directories.

  • For Windows XP: C:\Documents and Settings\Application Data\Lacerte
  • For Windows Vista and newer: C:\USERS\Appdata\Roaming\Lacerte

Paths include hidden folders, so set Windows to show hidden files and folders. Instead of browsing to the folder, enter either a system variable or a shell command.

  • For all supported versions of Windows:
    • the system variable is %AppData%
    • the command is shell:AppData
  • For Windows XP:
    1. Click Start and then Run...
    2. Type either %AppData% or shell:AppData in the Open: field and click OK.
    3. Double-click the Lacerte folder to see the different Lacerte ini files.
  • For Windows 7, 8, 10, and above:
    1. Click Start (the Windows Flag button)
    2. Type either %AppData% or shell:AppData in the Search box and click OK.
    3. Double-click the Lacerte folder to see the different Lacerte ini files.
  • The system variable %AppData% may also be typed into the address bar of Windows Explorer.

The DMS.ini for DMS version 8 and earlier (the version shipped with the 2010 Lacerte Tax program) continues to use the TY2009 location, described below.

  • For Windows XP, go to C:\Documents and Settings\Local Settings\Application Data\Lacerte
  • For Windows Vista and newer, go to C:\USERS\Appdata\Local\Lacerte

Paths include hidden folders, so set Windows to show hidden files and folders. Instead of browsing to the folder, use a shell command to get the appropriate folder.

  • For all supported versions of Windows:
    • Use the command shell:Local AppData.
  • For Windows XP:
    1. Click Start and then Run...
    2. Type shell:Local AppData in the Open: field and click OK.
    3. Double-click the Lacerte folder to see the different Lacerte ini files.
  • For Windows Vista and newer:
    1. Click Start (the Windows Flag button)
    2. Type shell:Local AppData in the Search box and click OK.
    3. Double-click the Lacerte folder to see the different Lacerte ini files.

For 2008 Lacerte and earlier, .ini files are located in the Windows directory. However, Windows Vista and Windows 7 don't allow non-administrators to modify files inside the Windows directory, and the file will be redirected to a modifiable location.

  • Windows XP the files are almost always in the default location C:Windows
    1. Click Start and then Run...
    2. Type %windir% in the Open: field and click OK.
  • For Windows Vista, Windows 7, and Windows Server 2003, 2008, and 2008 R2 check the following locations:
    • C:\Windows
    • C:\Program\Data\Lacerte
    • Click Start and then Run...
      1. Type %windir% in the Search box and click OK.
  • Note that the ProgramData folder is hidden, so set Windows to show hidden files and folders to browse there.
