Electronic filing an extension for business returns (1120, 1120S, 1065, and 1041)

Form 7004 is the extension form for Corporate, S-corporate, Partnership and Fiduciary return types. To electronically file Form 7004, Application for automatic extension of time to file certain business income tax, information, and other returns:

  1. Open the client's return.
  2. On the Federal Information Worksheet, scroll down to Part VI - Electronic Filing Information.
  3. Mark the extension box for the Federal filing type.
  4. If applicable: When an electronic funds withdrawal payment will be submitted with the extension:
    • Complete Part VII - Direct Deposit or Electronic Funds Withdrawal Information.
    • Select Yes for Electronic funds withdrawal of Form 7004 balance due.
    • Enter the Routing and Account number, and check the box to specify Checking or Savings.
  5. Open Form 7004.
  6. Mark the box for the line Check this box to freeze amounts flowing to this form.
  7. Go to the Information menu and select Final Review.
  8. Correct any messages marked in red as "You Must Fix This Error". These errors will guide you through the remaining entries, and resolve any errors that may prevent your extension from being filed electronically.
  9. Review any orange "You Should Fix This Error" messages. These errors are typically associated with completing your return and will not prevent your Extension from being filed electronically.
  10. Save the return.
  11. Go to the EF Center HomeBase View.  The EF Status column should now display 1st Extension Marked for EF for the client. If the EF Status does not display 1st Extension Marked for EF, return to the first step and review all inputs.
  12. Convert and transmit the first extension as you would an ordinary electronic return.
