I attempted to e-file a return and received a message that I didn't have the latest version of pro-series in order to do so. My updates say that I do.

Try going to your computer start button. Click on it and then select ProSeries and from there select "repair updates". See if that solves the problem.

not. However, when I select a taxpayer to work on I get a "scripts error", and it asks if I want to continue. Would that have anything to do with the problem?

Try rebooting your computer to fix that one.

If the client can't be E-Filed due to an error message about your program not being current, then reopen that client's file (including the state if applicable) and resave. This will change the client's data to be current with the recent upgrade. Then you should be able to E-File it.
