The taxpayer  (a 1041 as a result of death) has 10 beneficiaries. Due to warring family issues most of them will not provide a SSN or DOB. I hesitate to use the "applied for" status as I think that is reserved for people who don't have a valid SSN and not necessarily this situation. Please correct me if I am wrong about this. My client met an EA who said they submit the return with " requested " under the SSN input. Naturally, this will not pass for e-file but can this be used for paper file?

Thank you

Tell the beneficiaries they will not receive any checks (or at least any future checks) from the estate if they don't provide a Social Security number.  If that doesn't work, tell them that under the new tax law, they will be reported to the IRS and the penalty for not supplying a Social Security number for an estate equals 110 percent of the distribution that they received.  Sometimes creativity is needed to help convince people to do the right thing :).
