About the ERO PIN

An Electronic Return Originator (ERO) PIN is a numeric representation of the preparer's signature used on Form 8879. It's not assigned by any taxing agency, but rather self-selected. It can be any 5-digit number other than all 9's or all 0's. Refer to IRS Pub 1345 for more information.

How do I enter the ERO PIN?

If you get a diagnostic indicating that you do not have an ERO PIN, but you know your PIN is entered in preparer information, go to Screen 1, Client Information and confirm that the correct preparer has been selected in the Misc. Information section.

Follow these steps to enter the ERO PIN:

  1. From the Settings menu, select Options.
  2. Go to the Preparers tab.
  3. Select the preparer that will be e-filing returns by double-clicking on their name.
  4. In the ERO PIN field, enter a 5-digit number of your choosing.
  5. Click OK at the bottom of this window to save the changes.
  6. Repeat steps 3-6 for other preparers, if needed.
  7. Click OK in the bottom of the Options window to save your changes.

The ERO PIN can also be entered on a return-by-return basis by going to the Electronic Filing screen. Simply click on and enter the ERO PIN in the appropriate field. The screen number differs from module to module.
