Fatal diagnostics will prevent an electronic record from being created.

There are three categories of diagnostics:

1. Fatal are generated when fundamental information is missing from a return. These diagnostics will prevent the electronic return from being created.
2. Critical appear when information may affect the outcome of the return. Critical diagnostics can be both fatal and informational and will sometimes prevent the creation of the electronic return.
3. Informational appear when information has been entered that could affect the outcome of the return but the information doesn't require a change or adjustment.

Diagnostics related to an e-file return will be noted as 'e-file'.
