Before you start:
- Make a copy of the original return.
- Make sure the copy of the original return is unlocked.
- If you are filing an amended return that hasn't previously been amended, see How do I amend an individual return (1040X) in Lacerte?
To amend a previously amended return prepared in Lacerte:
- On the Client List select the copy of the client file.
- From the E-file menu, select e-file Support Tools, then Clear Return, then Amended Return.
- Under Select the e-file you want to clear: choose US and select Clear.
- Select Yes.
- Open the copy of the return.
- Go to Screen 59, Amended Return (1040X).
- Press Ctrl+W to open batch mode.
- Select Code 1.
- Press and hold Ctrl+D on the keyboard until all codes have been deleted.
- Go to the Forms tab and make sure Form 1040X is no longer showing in bold.
- If Form 1040X is still showing in bold, repeat steps 6–9 until the Form 1040X is no longer generating.
- Go to Screen 59, Amended Return (1040X).
- Under Return(s) to Amend in the Federal/state return(s) to amend (Ctrl+T) (MANDATORY) field, select the federal and states you need to amend and select OK.
- If prompted to make a copy of the return, select No.
- Make changes or corrections to the return. These will be done in screens 1-100.
- In Screen 59, the Federal Income Tax Return section is mostly overrides and doesn't require manual entries or adjustments usually. This section will auto-fill when you complete step 12.
- Under the Forms tab, review the 1040 and 1040-X to make sure all expected changes have been made.
- Check for Diagnostics and clear any critical e-file diagnostics.
- From the E-file menu, select Start e-file Amended Return Wizard and complete the wizard to e-file the amended return.
To amend a previously amended return that was not prepared in Lacerte:
- Go to Screen 59, Amended Return (1040X).
- Scroll down to the Federal Income Tax Return section.
- Enter the Amended Return Amounts under the As Originally Reported column.
- This should match the amounts from the 1040X, Column C that was already filed.
- Make changes or corrections to the return. These will be done in Screens 1-100.
- If the 1040X, Column A isn't pulling in the amounts you entered on Screen 59, use the steps above under To amend a previously amended return prepared in Lacerte.
