Computer Upgrade and Prior years programs

mtlmihelich

I am a sole-proprietor who runs a very small office.  I am upgrading my desktop computer that currently houses all of my Lacerte programs.  I am trying to figure out what to transfer to the new desktop (don't want to take all of the prior years programs with me if I don't have too).  Are each years of clients returns saved with that years program (if I want to access a return from 2018 can I only do so via the 2018 program) ... or are the files perpetual (like in QB) when i could pull up the client in the 2020 program and access prior years returns there ?

You have posted in a "suggestions box" portion of the forum.

may help.

Each year must be accessed from it's associated year program. I suggest you possibly print all returns to pdf as an extra backup. I used a large external hard drive to back up everything in the Lacerte directory. That included all files, programs and data.  I also backed up my documents/photos/.... everything I thought I might want on the new computer. You can get 1 or 2 TERRABYTE drive for about $50. It makes the move much easier.
