Generating Form 5500 extensions in Lacerte

Below, you'll find answers to frequently asked questions about filing 5558 Extensions in the Benefit Plan module:

To generate a Form 5558 for Benefit Plan filers:

1. Go to Screen 5, Extension (5558)
2. Here you can check what type of extension the benefit plan needs. The available options are:
   • Generate Form 5558 for Form 5550 series
   • Generate Form 5558 for Form 8955-SSA
   • Generate Form 5558 for Form 5330
   • Automatic extension
   • Special extension
     Refer to the online instructions to determine which extension type is needed.
3. If you are filing Form 5558 for Form 5330 complete the additional entries as needed for:
   • Payment amount
   • Code section imposing the tax
   • Reversion/amendment date

Are the extensions able to be e-filed through Lacerte?

Extensions cannot be e-filed for the 5500 series forms. See the Where to File information in the 5558 instruction booklet.
