DMS DBISAM Engine Error Opening DMS or Updating Database

Attempting to open the DMS program fails or attempting to update the DMS folder templates and attempting to import any client or file may receive one of the following errors:

  • DMS DBISAM Engine Error ????? - Unable to Initialize Database 
  • DMS DBISAM Engine Error ????? - Access denied to table or backup file

Solution

These errors can occur if your anti-virus program is not configured to exclude the DMS program and database folder. Contact your anti-virus vendor for instructions on how to configure real-time scanning to exclude the following locations:

  • %USERPROFILE%AppDataLocalTempDMSTemp
  • C:Program Files (x86)IntuitDMS
  • The location of your database.

After excluding the folders above, try the operation again.  If the persists, follow the steps in the section below.

Before you Begin: This should be done by the Network Administrator. Doing this on your own can cause damage and/or security risks.

  1. Browse to the folder where your DMS database resides.
  2. Right-click on the folder and select Properties.
  3. While on the General tab, unmark the box for Read-only and click Apply.
  4. Choose to do this for all files and sub-folders when prompted.
  5. Now click the Sharing tab.
  6. Select the radio button Share this folder.
  7. Click the Permissions button.
  8. In the Group or User Names: select Everyone.
  9. In the Permissions for Everyone select Allow for Full Control and click Apply.
  10. Select the Security tab.
  11. Verify that the EVERYONE group is selected.
  12. Verify that the Allow check box is checked for Full Control.
  13. Select Advanced at the bottom.
  14. Select the Everyone Group and click Change Permissions.
  15. Select the Everyone group and Click the box to "Replace all child object Permissions with Inheritable permissions from this object"
  16. Click Apply and Ok.
  17. Try the operation again.

  1. Go to the machine where the database resides.
  2. Copy the database folder to the Shared Documents* folder.
    • Note: Shared Documents is located in one of the two places depending on the operating system.
      • Windows Vista/7/8/10 - C:UsersPublicDocuments
  3. Rename the original database folder by adding -old at the end.
  4. Copy the database folder in the Shared Documents folder back to the original path.
  5. Then try the operation again.
  1. Verify DMS is closed then press Windows key + R.
  2. In the open box type %temp% and click OK to open the Temporary files folder.
  3. Find DMSTemp and open it.
  4. Delete all files in this directory.

This issue can also occur when a background process is conflicting with the operations that DMS is attempting to perform. The most common of these would include Anti-virus or other security software and Backup utilities, specifically software that performs Active Backups of your data. Disabling the actions of these types of software and rebooting may be required. It may also be required to use the Safe Mode boot option or a Diagnostic boot option to eliminate conflicting background processes that are interfering with DMS.
