How do I amend an Individual return using ProSeries?

Before you start:

  • Review the state amended form instructions to determine the correct procedures to follow if the federal changes will impact your client's state return.
  • If you are re-creating an original 1040 return be sure to enter amounts on the appropriate forms and do not override amounts on the 1040.
  • The following states do not have a separate amended form and the amended return will be indicated on the original form:
AL, AK, DC, HI, ID, KS, LA, ME, MS, MO, MT, NH, NC, ND, OH, OK, OR, TN, UT, VT, VA, WV, WI and Michigan Business Tax.
  • If you are amending for a net operating loss carryback you will need to check the box indicating a NOL carryback is included on Line 1 of the 1040X.
  • If you are amending for a general business credit carryback you will need to check the box indicating a general business credit carryback is included on line 7 of the 1040X.
  • Dependent changes are made on the Federal Information Worksheet.
  • Starting in tax year 2019 the IRS will begin accepting e-filed versions of the 1040X. Prior years must still be paper-filed.
